Les Trois Canards

We've been twice now to a tiny, quirky restaurant at 163 South Coast Road, Peacehaven. It appears to be run by a delightful couple of pensioners; he a french chef and she his waitress wife. It has the feel of someones front room, converted relatively inexpensively into a restaurant. That said, the green velvet upholstery all matches and the tablecloths are linen. If the 20-odd seats were all filled I suspect they would struggle but we have enjoyed the unhurried feel, knowing the food is prepared fresh when we order. You would be well advised to book, but they don't advertise; I couldn't even find them listed in the phone book! They run a fixed 3-course menu which costs 19.50 per head and changes every 2 weeks. The wine list is not extensive. We had a choice of 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 desserts. The food has been superb on both occasions. My lamb today was "melt-in-the-mouth" tender, the portions were a good size without being excessive and the food was beautifully presented without resorting to oversized plates and drizzled jus. When I had signed the old-fashioned carbonised credit card slip and we stood up to leave, the chef came out to bid us bon soir. If you fancy an unhurried, traditional but beautifully cooked french meal in a slightly quirky setting, Les Trois Canards gets my vote! A Eating Out guide reader.
