On Saturday the 25th March 2017, Mayo Wynne Baxter Solicitors are commemorating the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity who has been helping sick children across Sussex for 50 years. To mark this golden anniversary we are having a fundraising event like no other - The Brighton Medieval Banquet. This themed dining experience will be a truly unique event as you will be one of over 400 guests transported back in time. The night will start with a drinks reception, tankards of ale and goblets of wine before you are called to be seated at the long banqueting tables in the 'Kings Hall'. Celebrate English Tourism Week with a special evening in the Belle Vue restaurant on Thursday 30 March with Harvey’s Brewery, tasting delicious hearty dishes prepared using local ingredients and served with complementing hand-crafted ales. Harvey’s has been brewing traditional ales among the cobbled streets of Lewes for more than 200 years, using South Downs spring water and the finest local raw ingredients. Harveys’ brewer Edmund Jenner will welcome guests to the Food and Ale Pairing Evening with a fascinating talk about the history of the brewery and the brewing process. During the meal, he will help bring the flavours alive by giving detailed tasting notes for each ale. The hall is in walking distance of many local communities including Patcham, Hollingbury, Coldean, Withdean, Westedene and the Surrenden Rd/ Varndean areas. Sea Life Brighton unveils its latest captivating installation, Claws – welcoming a host of fascinating new shell-dwelling creatures. This includes two statuesque Japanese Spider Crabs which have a leg span of a whopping 1.3 metres and can grow to the size of a car! Other creatures on display include a Peacock Mantis Shrimp, one of the most brightly coloured animals in the world, Velvet Crabs, Starfish, Green Urchins, plus Tropical Cray Fish and large Land Hermit Crabs. There is also the chance to participate in crabby craft sessions. Marine enthusiasts will get to experience some of the ocean’s most spectacular shellfish.

Normans and Crusaders, taking place at the Castle from 15-17 April, will transport visitors to the end of the 12th Century, when England was under the rule of Richard the Lionheart. With King Richard dead and his unpopular brother John now King, England has been plunged into The Barons’ War. Arundel Castle guards the road linking the Medieval ports of Shoreham, Pagham, and Portsmouth, as well as access to the sea via the River Arun, and so it is the logical mustering point for men, and supplies. But who will the Earl of Arundel support, King John or the Barons? Set within a historical tented encampment, Raven Tor Living History Group will be recreating the crafts, weapons training and battle tactics of the late 12th century. With a story teller and falconry, plus archery and combat demonstrations, the weekend will be filled with the sights, sounds and smells of the late Norman period.

Arundel Castle in West Sussex is to play host to a thrilling three-day siege event – which will have visitors on tenterhooks throughout the May Bank Holiday weekend. It is 1485 and Richard III is King of England. Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond has laid claim to the throne and landed in Wales, supported by French forces. Seeing the opportunity, another a French force has also crossed the Channel, seized the Kings Ordinance (artillery) and surrounded the Castle at Arundel. The French intend to hold the Earl of Arundel’s fortress, allowing a stronger invasion force to cross from France, sail up the River Arun and into the heart of Sussex. Although there was no historical siege of Arundel Castle in the 15th century, this three-day event will show the importance of artillery in taking a Castle, and as a battle field weapon. Visitors will be able to see skirmishes between the two sides, crafts, costumes and armour of the period. With the tented encampments of Raven Tor Living History Group, The Wessex Medieval Alliance, and The Company of St. Barbara, covering the upper grounds of the Castle, this May Bank Holiday weekend will be filled with the sounds of battle and conflict.
